Water resounded around me, flooding my ears and bombarding my senses. Mountain air swept through the clearing, twining its windy fingers around my hair. Great. I was in the dreamscape again.

Tatum kicked my side, jolting me from my rest. “What was that for?” I shouted, leaping to my feet. “What are you doing?”

He sat, crossing his long legs and reclining on the grass. “I’m simply keeping your unconscious, angry, brooding self company. Honestly, brooding is quite ugly on you. You shouldn’t wear that emotion.”

I hissed a breath. “Thanks for letting me know. I’ll be sure to brood more often.”

His eyes flickered, a question lingering behind the many layers of his expressionless face. “What happened earlier? Between you and the Lord of the Crimson Plane?”

I leveled my gaze, not wanting to give him any information.

“Staying quiet, are we?” Tatum smiled, a single black rose spinning between his fingers. Where did he get that? “Well, I’m glad. Your voice is so grating I find it rather annoying.”

Balling my hands into fists, I tried to prepare a worthy attack. “Then you won’t protest my silence.” He was baiting me. I crossed my arms, taking a few steps to the water and dipping my bare feet in. Stars floated all around me, dancing over the lake and fleeing to the gemstone mountain in the distance. This place was getting more and more detailed every time…

“Honestly, a love-sick immortal is the absolute worst.”

“I’m not love-sick!” Fire built in my veins. “And I’m not an immortal.”

“You imbecile, you are. To both. It’s written all over your face.” Tatum rolled his eyes. “You can’t hide it.”

“Who are you calling an imbecile—”

“You, Meris.” Tatum turned to mist and reappeared beside me. Was that new? “You keep missing everything. You’re missing all the clues. All the hints. All the signs.”

“What signs? What am I missing?”

His grin was feral and refined all at once. “I cannot tell you. Either you open your own eyes, or someone else will have to.”

“Why can’t you tell me?”

“Destiny, perhaps? Call it what you want, I simply know if I tell you, things would crumble.”
